Mathematical and numerical modeling of an airlift perfusion bioreactor for tissue engineering applications

2022

The Tissue Engineering (TE) strategy is widely focused on the development of perfusion bioreactors to promote the production of three-dimensional (3D) functional tissues. To optimize tissue production, it is worth investigating the engineering parameters of a bioreactor system for identifying a beneficial range of operation variables. Mathematical and numerical modeling of a perfusion bioreactor is capable to provide relevant insights into the fluid flow and nutrients transport while predicting experimental data and exploring the impact of changing operating parameters, such as fluid velocities. In this work, the hydrodynamic parameters and oxygen transport were investigated using mathemati…

Biotrickling filter modeling for styrene abatement. Part 2: Simulating a two-phase partitioning bioreactor.

2017

Abstract A dynamic model describing styrene abatement was developed for a two-phase partitioning bioreactor operated as a biotrickling filter (TPPB-BTF). The model was built as a coupled set of two different systems of partial differential equations depending on whether an irrigation or a non-irrigation period was simulated. The maximum growth rate was previously calibrated from a conventional BTF treating styrene (Part 1). The model was extended to simulate the TPPB-BTF based on the hypothesis that the main change associated with the non-aqueous phase is the modification of the pollutant properties in the liquid phase. The three phases considered were gas, a water–silicone liquid mixture, …

Unravelling environment and politics in the Spanish press. From Franco’s dictatorship to democracy

2017

The 1970s and 1980s were key years for the consolidation of environmentalism and environmental communication. In Spain, the special political situation during General Franco’s military dictatorship conditioned the coverage of environmental issues, as did the transition to democracy. The Albufera Natural Park (Valencia, Spain) was a particularly significant case in this context, since it was involved in one of the first environmental protests to protect a natural area covered by Spanish media. In this paper, we study opinion articles published in the Valencian newspapers Las Provincias and Levante, in order to analyze the evolution of the environmental discourse in Spanish society from the d…

Contemporary Anti-Gypsyism in European Mass Media

2014

This paper focuses on the contemporary phenomenon of Anti-Gypsyism which diffused widely throughout social representations of the so called “Gypsies”. In Europe and especially in Italy, the media tends to reproduce racist stereotypes and prejudices through a xenophobic depiction of this ethnic group, often offering an ethnocentric point of view. From an anthropological perspective, Roma people are a minority group facing diasporic phenomena across Europe, produced by the host societies.

Debating Europe: Effects of the “Eurovision Debate” on EU Attitudes of Young German Voters and the Moderating Role Played by Political Involvement

2016

In the run-up to the elections to the European Parliament in 2014, EU citizens had the unprecedented opportunity to watch televised debates between the candidates running for president of the European Commission. The most important debate was the so-called "Eurovision debate", which was broadcasted in almost all EU member states. In this study we explore the responses of a sample of 110 young German voters, who watched this debate, to the candidates' messages and whether exposure to the debate caused a shift in the respondents' attitudes towards the EU. Combining data from a quasi-experiment, real-time response data, and data from a content analysis of the debate, we find that respondents' …

Introducing exergy analysis in life cycle assessment: A case study

2018

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a methodology for assessing the potential environmental aspects associated with a product or service along its life cycle. However, in the case of energy technologies, it is suggested that the LCA of a product encompasses also further aspects other than environmental aspects and primary energy calculations. In particular, to optimize the reduction of raw materials during the whole life cycle, it is important to introduce the assessment of the irreversibility, applying the exergy analysis. In this paper, an integrated approach of exergy analysis and LCA is proposed, developing the Life-cycle quality index able to suggest potential exergy inefficiencies and the …

Development of a combined solver to model transport and chemical reactions in catalytic wall-flow filters

2017

Abstract In this work, we develop a non-isothermal model for diesel particulate filters including exothermic and competing chemical reactions. We begin with an isothermal, single-reaction model and we gradually increase its complexity. By comparing various models, we aim at establishing the minimum degree of complexity required to effectively model the system under investigation. Based on the numerical simulations, we conclude that isothermal models are adequate only if the temperature of the catalyst is, at all times, completely below or completely above a critical temperature. However, if the goal is to predict the critical temperature, only non-isothermal models should be used. The resul…

Effect of Boundary Conditions on the Hydrogen Absorption in a Metal Hydride Reactor

2018

In this paper, a numerical study of the heat and mass transfer in a metal hydride reactor is presented. The reaction within the metal hydride reactor is exothermic. That makes the hydriding process less effective. Thus, a cooling system is needed to reduce the temperature in order to increase the amount of the absorbed hydrogen. The geometry of the studied reactor is cylindrical with (H=3cm) of height and (R=5cm) of radius. A heat exchanger is considered in the lateral and base walls. The transfer is considered two-dimensional and transient. The governing equations of the transfer phenomenon are based on the conservation principle of mass, momentum and energy. Using the finite volume method…
